Description
Polyester Double Braid is a rope made with two braided components:
-
Inner core (braided core): A braided rope at the center that carries the primary load.
-
Outer sheath (braided cover): Another braided layer that protects the core and contributes to strength and abrasion resistance.
This dual-braiding construction provides a rope that is strong, flexible, and resistant to wear and environmental degradation.
🔹 Structure and Construction:
1. Core:
-
Constructed from high-tensile polyester fibers.
-
Carries most of the load.
-
Braided structure improves flexibility and reduces twisting under load.
2. Cover:
-
Also made from braided polyester yarns.
-
Provides protection against abrasion, UV rays, and chemical exposure.
-
Shares the load with the core (especially in high-quality constructions).
3. Balance:
-
In high-performance double braid ropes, the core and cover are load-balanced, meaning both share the tension load evenly.
🔹 Key Characteristics:
Property | Description |
---|---|
Material | 100% high-tenacity polyester (sometimes blends exist) |
Strength | High tensile strength; varies by diameter (e.g., ½” can exceed 6,000 lbs) |
Stretch | Low stretch under load (~2-3% at working loads) |
Abrasion Resistance | Excellent, especially with tight braiding |
UV Resistance | Very good, ideal for prolonged outdoor use |
Water Absorption | Minimal (~0.5%), retains strength when wet |
Handling | Soft, flexible, easy to splice and coil |
Melting Point | ~260°C (500°F) |
Density | ~1.38 g/cm³ (will not float in water) |
🔹 Common Uses:
Industry | Application Examples |
---|---|
Marine | Dock lines, anchor lines, sheets, halyards |
Industrial | Winch lines, pulling lines, slings |
Theater/Rigging | Flying effects, curtain rigging |
Arborist | Climbing lines, rigging lines |
Outdoor/Recreation | Tent guy lines, rescue systems |
🔹 Advantages:
-
Maintains strength and integrity when wet.
-
More durable than nylon in sunlight and abrasive conditions.
-
Low stretch makes it ideal where minimal elongation is needed.
-
Doesn’t become stiff or brittle over time.
